All nurses and midwives are invited to renew their general or non-practising registration online, in their Ahpra portal.
If you hold more than one registration type or have endorsements, make sure you also renew everything you need to continue practising. Check the Register of practitioners if you’re not sure.
Remember, you need to renew in your Ahpra portal by 31 May 2026 to avoid any delays or late fees.
Read the renewal FAQs on the Ahpra website. They cover common questions on professional indemnity insurance, recency of practice, continuing professional development, and what to do if you have a change in your criminal history or health impairments you need to tell us about. Remember you don’t need to tell us about well managed health conditions that do not affect your practice. The NMBA website also has information for renewing practitioners, including on exposure-prone procedures; read the fact sheet to help you answer accurately.
If you’ve never renewed your registration before, visit our first-time renewing page for more information.
Visit the Ahpra portal help centre for helpful tips on logging on. Don’t forget to keep your contact details up to date, which includes an email that is unique to you.
The online register of practitioners is updated every day, making it the safest way for you, your employer and the public to check registration status.
The fee for general registration has been set at $193 and will apply to the majority of nurses and midwives. If you hold both nursing and midwifery registration only need to pay one registration renewal fee. The renewal fee for nurses and midwives whose principal place of practice is New South Wales, is $189.You can find the full schedule of fees on the NMBA website.
In Australia, all regulated health practitioners are required to hold professional indemnity insurance (PII) to practise their profession.
Privately practising midwives have an exemption from PII requirements when providing intrapartum care for homebirths until 31 December 2026.
To enable this exemption, privately practising midwives must comply with the NMBA's Safety and quality guidelines for privately practising midwives. This includes obtaining informed consent that acknowledges that appropriate PII arrangements may not be in force in relation to the midwife’s practice.
From 1 January 2027, all privately practising midwives will be required to hold appropriate PII when providing intrapartum care for homebirths.
When you renew your general registration, you are asked to declare if you have met the CPD registration standard in the previous registration period. All enrolled nurses, registered nurses and midwives must complete a minimum of 20 hours of CPD per registration period.
If you hold and endorsement for scheduled medicines or who have an endorsement as a nurse practitioner, you must do additional CPD hours. Check the registration standard for what CPD hours you need to declare.
If you are renewing for the first time, the studies which qualified you for registration as a nurse or a midwife do not count as CPD.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nurses and midwives can reach out to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Engagement and Support team for support through the renewal process.
