Statement from Ahpra CEO Justin Untersteiner on NMBA renewal

01 May 2025

I would like to acknowledge the challenges that some nurses and midwives are experiencing in renewing their registration which requires an additional step of setting up an Ahpra portal this year.

I would like to assure you that no one will be deregistered as a result of having difficulty in accessing our new system.

In March Ahpra introduced a new case management operating system to cut red tape and make it simpler for practitioners to apply for, renew and manage their registration. This is the most significant IT infrastructure upgrade since Ahpra was formed in 2010.

It includes a new Ahpra portal (a one-stop shop for Ahpra services), digital smart forms, and multifactor authentication for increased protection of personal data from cyber threats.

Since nursing and midwifery renewal opened on 29 April, 47,000 nurses have successfully renewed their registration using the new portal.

However, we are aware that some practitioners have experienced challenges in setting up their portal and require additional support, and our customer service team is experiencing very high call volumes. I apologise to those who have had difficulty contacting us.

Ahpra’s website has a Help portal that includes video guides and trouble-shooting tips. You are encouraged to watch these before setting up your portal.

If you still need our help after that, we are expanding our customer service team, and our hotline hours will be extended to 8am – 8pm AEST, from Thursday 8 May.

You’re encouraged to set up your portal now but don’t worry, there’s still plenty of time to renew.
